It gives attachment to the anterior sacrococcygeal ligament and the fifth sacral nerve.

On either side, two lateral sacrococcygeal ligaments run between the transverse processes of the coccyx and the inferior lateral angle of the sacrum.

Together with the posterior, and intercornual sacrococcygeal ligaments, they stabilize the sacrococcygeal symphysis, i . e . the joint between the sacrum and the coccyx.
